Position Overview
NVDPL is looking for two regular full-time Senior Circulation Assistants to ensure the smooth operation of the Circulation team in the absence of the Circulation Supervisor, supervise the Library Pages and their work, and provide front line service to the general public.

Reporting to the Circulation Supervisor, you will supervise the library’s Page staff and perform a variety of tasks as part of the Circulation team, including but not limited to, checking library materials in and out, registering patrons, collecting fees, resolving patron complaints, reconciling monies received and preparing bank deposits.  

What you’ll be doing
In addition to the primary tasks noted above, aspects of the role will also include:

  • Providing services to patrons and visitors in person, online and over the phone
  • Training Pages, supporting the training of new library assistants, and assisting with team scheduling issues
  • Maintaining the periodical and newspaper collection
  • Processing hold requests and new, damaged, lost and overdue materials
  • Performing opening and closing procedures
  • Setting up book trucks for shelving and shelving library items
  • Packing and unpacking delivery boxes
  • Ordering supplies needed for daily circulation tasks
  • Addressing problems with multi-function devices, washrooms, and behavioural issues that arise in the public space
  • Other related tasks
 
What you’ll need to succeed 
  • Considerable experience completing circulation tasks in a public library team environment
  • A commitment to service excellence, recognizing that the library serves members of the public from all walks of life
  • An understanding of circulation-related policies, procedures, automation, standard software applications (eg. Micosoft) and public library operations
  • A demonstrated ability to provide leadership and supervision in close partnership with the Circulation Supervisor, requiring strong communication skills
  • Organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Leading by example while demonstrating your ability to deal courteously, effectively and efficiently with the public and maintain working relationships with other employees
  • Physical capacity to handle heavy library materials and to stand for long periods 
  • Ability to take initiative, ask for assistance, and step-up to help
  • Completion of Grade 12

  • Additional courses related to the work
  • An understanding that digital literacy is a component of library services and are comfortable handling technology devices such as tablets, netbooks, and eReaders

The hourly pay rate for this unionized position starts at $27.30 (2024 rates), based on a 35-hour workweek, plus a generous benefits package. This work requires flexible availability, including evenings and weekend shifts.
